The facility marked a significant step in ensuring the Malindi Sub-county Hospital is well-equipped to respond to emergencies.

Coast residents are set to benefit once the ongoing construction of an Intensive Care Unit at the Malindi Sub County Hospital is complete.

The construction of the ICU is expected to be complete in three and half months, making a significant step in ensuring the Malindi Sub-county hospital is well-equipped to respond to critical medical situations.

Speaking in Kilifi County during the monitoring and evaluation exercise at the hospital on Thursday, Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, The Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) & Regional Development Penina Malonza said the construction of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) marks a significant step forward in ensuring that the Malindi Sub-county hospital is well-equipped to handle emergencies.

"We are confident that it will substantially impact the healthcare landscape of Malindi, Lamu and Tana River counties," she said.

According to Malonza, the project aligns with the overarching goals of the Malindi Integrated Social and Health Development programme, which seeks to promote the community's overall well-being.

"This collaborative effort underscores the importance of global partnerships in addressing crucial healthcare needs and building resilient communities. Through its commitment to supporting health initiatives, the Italian government has played a pivotal role in making this project a reality," said the CS.

On his part, Malindi Sub County Hospital medical superintendent David Mang'ong'o noted that the eight-bed ICU will substantially impact the landscape of Malindi and its surroundings.

"This momentous occasion symbolizes a giant leap forward in healthcare provision for residents of Malindi, Magarini and other counties including Lamu and Tana River," Dr Mang'ong'o said.

The project is being funded by the Coast Development Authority (CDA).

CDA Director Mohammed Keinan Hassan said that the facilities proposed through the Sh950 million Malindi Integrated Social and Health Development Program Phase II were triggered by the significant development gaps that need to be addressed after the completion of Phase I implemented in the same region between 2008 and 2012.

"This initiative will see the construction of an ICU at the Malindi Sub County Hospital, the tarmacking of the 11.5K kilometre Mjanaheri-Ngomeni road, the construction of Burangi by-pass footbridge, the construction of classrooms in various schools, including Ngomeni secondary School and prestigious award scheme for the best- performance students," said Hassan.
